Gloucestershire can easily be said to have some of the most stirring and stunning landscapes in the whole of the country. It’s the green and pleasant land writ large and ready to be roamed in. To start with there is the wonderful Cotswold Way to traverse it all where it starts in the south in Bath and makes its way all the way up to Chipping Camden in the North near the border of Gloucestershire. Or you could do it in reverse! As we all know if you walk south it feels like going downhill! This is just the simple view through there are so many other sights to see and here are some of them. Go to any of these places and you’ll see the rolling hills and the picturesque buildings that seem to be honey colour in the waning sunlight at sunset. The Broadway Tower stands at 65 feet tall, but you don’t actually need to climb up it to appreciate the incredible panoramic views it has out to the Malverns. If you’re lucky and the day is clear you can see a total of 16 other counties. It’s also one of those places where it looks good in the rain as well it just becomes moody and atmospheric.
Onto top of the Cotswolds lies Minchinhampton and Rodborough Common. It’s perfect for a good long ramble as there are plenty of pubs and the famous and very tasty Winstones ice cream to keep you going. You’ll certainly meet your fair share of fellow walkers plus some Horse riders and lost golfers as well! Up on the common there are great views of Stroud and if you’re up for a very big yomp there is an incredible view all the way down the Severn Sea or Bristol Channel if you prefer.
You cannot get higher in the Cotswolds than Cleeve hill. It’s a short drive or a very long walk up from Gloucester and Cheltenham. Once you’re up there; there is a great view of Cheltenham and out to the Malverns and the forest of Dean. The pub does a good pint and other refreshments to revive you.
In the heart of the Cotswold lies another landscape to view but it’s not a vista. This is the beautiful tree lined landscape of Westonbirt Arboretum. You can even be part of the trees themselves with a new tree top walk. It’s a wonderful sight in summer when the trees are in full leaf but also in the Autumn as they start to turn. It’s very life affirming.
But this is just the start there is the Windrush valley and the family fun of Bourton on the Water featuring one of the most picturesque drives ever, there is the Capital of the Cotswolds, Cirencester and its sculptured park. A truly wonderful part of Britain.
