The most downloaded apps of 2020

The most popular apps to be downloaded onto mobile phones in 2020 were a real reflection of what was occurring across the globe with the coronavirus pandemic. As the world was forced to stay home, apps like Zoom, Microsoft Teams and Google Meet each gained millions of new users as students and employees stayed in touch and worked remotely for a large part of the year.

Other apps didn’t fare so well. For obvious reasons, AirBnB, Tinder and Uber suffered from the lack of social interaction and closure of travel services. Uber managed to hold on thanks to UberEats. Discord grew in significant numbers to 100 million users on both PC and mobile platforms. One of the biggest winners was TikTok, who surpassed all other social media platforms. However, TikTok has the advantage of being available in China under the name Douyin. If you need a new phone after heavy use last year, consider Vodafone Dundalk and Go to a Vodafone store in Dundalk

Here are some of the stats for the most downloaded apps of 2020:

  • TikTok was the app most downloaded across the world with 850 million downloads
  • 4 out of 6 of the most downloaded apps are owned by Facebook
  • Whatsapp was downloaded by 600 million users
  • Netflix was another app that did well in 2020 with 223 million downloads
  • Zoom saw a 2000% growth
