Create a routine when remote working

Your commute time is reduced to zero when you work at home. Your housemates are now your colleagues and your break room becomes your kitchen. It’s possible that you won’t be able to stick to the same routine, but it is still important to structure your day.

How to work from home?

  • Get up early and get ready for the day.
  • It’s not necessary to don office wear, but getting ready for the day by doing the basics such as showering, brushing teeth and dressing at the same time each morning can help you get through the day.
  • Decide what you will focus on during the day. Use a to-do listing or something more advanced like project management software.
  • Organise your calendar to include all of your appointments and meetings. You can schedule time for concentrated work and breaktime activities such as walking your dog or washing the clothes.

It is not necessary to plan out each minute of your day in order to be a remote worker. However, it does help to have a consistent, clear routine. This can make you more efficient, and it helps your family (such as children and significant others) to know when you are available. You may feel under pressure to maximise your productivity when you work from home. We often measure productivity by the number of tasks we complete. We feel guilty if we leave things undone.

This may not be a good idea, especially if you are still adjusting to remote work. Here are some tips on how to take care of yourself while working remotely.

  • Plan regular breaks where you stand up, move around, and step away from your computer. Breaks will help you refocus and recharge, which can make you more productive.
  • Regularly exercise and go outside. Even a short walk around the neighbourhood can be beneficial to your physical and mental health.
