Most Valuable Coins

Some of the world’s most valuable coins are worth so much because they are rare. Whether you’re a seasoned coin collector or have stumbled upon a stash of old coins, you might wonder if any of them are worth more than you think. While it’s rare to uncover a fortune, it can happen. Here are a few of the world’s most valuable coins:

Flowing Hair Silver Dollar from 1794

This coin was one of the most expensive ever to be sold. It is thought to be the first silver coin ever issued by the U.S. Mint and depicts Lady Liberty with her hair flowing gracefully. On the reverse is the American Eagle. It is an essential coin in American history, with less than 1800 ever being produced.

723 Umayyad Gold Dinar

This coin is the most prized of all Islamic coinage and was made from a gold mine at the caliph-owned location. It is the first coin that mentions a place in Saudi Arabia, and only approximately a dozen are still in circulation. This gold coin raised £3.7 million when sold at auction in 2011. Brasher Doubloon from 1787

A coin created before the federal mint, the Brasher Doubloon was the first gold coin to be struck in America. It was made by Ephraim Brasher, a neighbour of George Washington, and while a few were produced, only one bears his initials. It was last sold in 2021 for more than $9 million.

Edward III Florin from 1343

An English coin that has survived for almost 700 years, the florin might have been a small change once upon a time, but it is now a scarce and highly sought-after coin. It is also known as the Double Leopard and is one of a few coins worth millions.

Liberty Head V Nickel from 1913

Interestingly, according to official records, these coins do not exist. However, there are known to be five such coins in circulation. Two are on display in museums, with three in private collections. The last one sold reached an impressive $4.5 million in 2018.

Canadian Maple Leaf Coin from 2007

A more recent entry, the $1 million gold maple leaf coin, was the first coin made from 100 kg of pure 99.99% gold. Five were sold to investors, and one was stolen from a museum in Germany with thieves using a wheelbarrow to carry the gold bullion coin!
