Flowers to See in the autumn

Flowers are something that brighten up everyone’s day – whether it is sitting out in the garden on a summer’s day enjoying a range of beautiful blooms, or having a professional bouquet from somewhere like this Tewkesbury florist flowershedtewkesbury.co.uk to brighten up your home, having flowers around you is something that can lift your spirits.

Unfortunately when  autumn and winter arrive, there are less flowers in the gardens, but going out into the woods is still an opportunity to see some beautiful sights, and along with the beautiful autumn leaf colours, there are many plants that you still can see at this time of the year to lift your spirits.

Here are some of the plants to look out for in the autumn…

Common Mallow – The bright and bold pink flowers of the common mallow add a splash of colour to the autumn countryside. It is a large plant that spreads quickly and can be found on grass verges as well as in the woodlands and grasslands. It is found all over the UK but more commonly found in the south.

Ivy – At this time of the year the beautiful ivy plant starts to flower, which is an important source of food for the later flying bees. The flowers of ivy are very distinctive in smell as well as in appearance, producing domes of flowers called umbels. You can find ivy all over the UK, and being a hardy evergreen that blooms all year around it is one of the few green splashes in the winter woods.

Tufted Vetch – This scrambling purple plant is something that you are likely to see on grassland and at the edges of woodland from June to late September. It can also be found near the coast. It is a member of the pea family and can be found throughout the UK.

Birds Foot Trefoil – Another member of the pea family that you might find in the autumn is birds foot trefoil which goes by other names such as eggs and bacon – relating to its yellow colour. It grows low to the ground and is found in grass covered places from fields to open grassland and even in the garden. It is an important food for some species of caterpillars too.
