Taking a step around Northern Ireland.

Due to its unspoilt beauty and rolling hills the country of Northern Ireland represents a great place to take a walking holiday. The country is crammed full of brisk trails for you to walk, in fact there are so many that hiring out a Log Cabins Northern Ireland like the ones available at http://logcabinsnorthernireland.com/and using it as a base of holiday operations might be the best bet.

One of the most spectacular walks you could ever undertake is the North Antrim coast up to Giants Causeway.  The coast line is one of the most unspoilt regions of the UK affording a magnificent view across the Irish Sea to Scotland up and around to the Atlantic and a Coastline that is buffeted and blown by the wild winds that sometimes even come down from the Arctic. There are also the picturesque villages such as Cushenden, Cushendall and Ballintoy where they filmed the home coming of Theon Greyjoy for Game of Thrones (which has created quite a buzz about Northern Ireland due to the amount of locations used there). Along the way one of the most popular and must see things to do is to cross the daunting Carrick a Rede rope bridge before making the final leg up to the incredible Giants Causeway, a fantastic and natural geological wonder of hexagonal basalt columns.

The other major walking area in the country is the Mourne Mountains. While the peaks are high you still don’t need to trek all the way up to the top of them to see them. There lower foothills still provide a slightly less energetic challenge and they offer amazing views of the Mountains to boot.  The other great thing about the Mountains is that there is a series of laid marked trails for you to walk. For example the little 6 mile trek up (and down) Slieve Donard gives you some panoramic views of not only of Northern Ireland but on a clear day you can see right down south to Wicklow and Donegal plus Wales, the island of Man and even Scotland.  For the less strenuous there is the 1 mile circular walk around “The Giants Lair” at the Slieve Gullion Forest Park where children (and you!) can have meetings with artistic figures of dragons, giants and fairies.

This hasn’t even touched the Border lands around Enniskillen and Carlingford Lough either!  It’s a country built for walking and discovery.
